SZ031 - Marks in Knots

A striking vintage Saharan Zanafi flatweave, handwoven in richly saturated bands of crimson, indigo, saffron, forest green and ivory. The composition is rhythmic and deeply graphic — layered with symbolic motifs, lozenges and geometric markings traditionally woven as visual storytelling by Amazigh women of the Moroccan Sahara.

The title “Marks in Knots” reflects the language of the weave itself: every stripe and motif acting as a coded mark of identity, memory and place. The elongated proportions give the piece a strong architectural presence, while the softness and irregularity of the handwoven texture retain its warmth and humanity.

Unlike pile rugs, Zanafi weavings are created using intricate flatweave techniques that allow for extraordinary precision and movement within the pattern. This piece carries the quiet asymmetry and subtle variations that only true handwork can achieve.
